A healthy, functioning liver can lead to better overall health but also mentally helps your brain. The liver flushes out toxins in the bloodstream and protects the immune system from infection. Excessive alcohol drinking may drown out nutrients in the diet and interfere with the body’s digestion and flushing out processes. This can create toxin and fat build-up as well as progressive alcohol liver disease. Helping your liver in recovery is key to supporting better overall functioning in sobriety.
Garlic
Garlic is packed with body cleansing compounds: selenium and allicni. These protect the liver from damage. Garlic also contains high amounts of sulphur, which triggers the liver enzymes essential in the detox process. By adding garlic in meat or veggie stews, you can help the liver trigger these compounds. Add onions and you can feel a great detox effect.
Grapefruit
Grapefruits are packed with Vitamin C antioxidants known to boost the immune system and prevent disease. Not only do they help protect the liver, they also help clean you out. Including this in a daily diet can help wash out toxins preventing it from doing the job right.
Beetroot
An essential liver cleansing food is beetroot. Loaded with nutrients, it helps regulate blood pressure and flow, copper can hold off free radicals and help prevent infection. Vitamins B1, B2, and B6 help convert food to energy and boost the immune systems.
Green Leafy Vegetables
Vegetables like kale, spinach, and mustard greens are powerful cleansers of the liver. It can be consumed raw, cooked, or juiced. They suck up and neutralize the toxins in the bloodstream which produces bile. The liver needs bile to digest meals and get rid of waste build-up.
Fish
The liver needs amino acids found in protein. Fish is an excellent source of protein and omega 3 fatty acids. Eating cold-water fish like salmon, mackerel, and tuna three times per week is recommended. Season fish with lemon juice to boost the liver, which is high in vitamin C and aids in digestion and removing toxic substances.
The biggest thing a person can do for their liver is to eat healthy and live a balanced life including exercise and meditation of some kind. Helping the body rest gives it a chance to heal, while also providing it with necessary nutrients to support its optimal functioning.
