The attitude with which you approach problems or situations in your life almost always has an effect on the outcome of that situation. If you go into a job interview feeling down about your chances, you’ll probably not succeed. If you’re being a negative nancy when it comes to your treatment for addiction to drugs or alcohol, you’re not giving yourself the best effort or the best chance at a healthy recovery. Having a positive attitude about treatment and recovery is paramount to giving yourself a solid foundation on which to start to rebuild your life once you achieve sobriety.
Think about it this way; we constantly hear that you are what you eat, but you’re also what you think. If you think negatively constantly, negativity is going to be what defines your life. You’ll find yourself turning into Eyore, in a way, simply because your negative frame of mind has expanded to more aspects of your life than just the way you think. You get out of life what you put into life for the most part, and when you’re pumping yourself or the people around you with negativity in any way constantly, chances are you’re going to get a lot of it back. If you feel like you could never possibly make it through treatment or you couldn’t ever truly achieve a lasting sobriety, you’re simply setting yourself up for failure.
In a way, you have to almost fake it until you make it. Even if you’re stressed or anxious about how you can possibly hope to succeed in sober living, telling yourself repeatedly that you’ll make it is key. When positivity seems like the last thing you want to embrace, that’s exactly when you should leap into it with both feet. You have to be positive about your recovery and your future in order to succeed in treatment. Otherwise, you won’t be putting out the full effort that you and that future deserve.
Having a positive attitude when it comes to treatment is extremely important. By approaching treatment with an upbeat mindset that you WILL succeed, you’re already on the road you need to be on. Treatment isn’t easy, and it can be downright uncomfortable, but the right attitude will make all of the difference.
